Safe and sound for smiles all round

When starting a home, no one thinks of the kind of furniture that may become a little problematic when you have crawling babies or sprinting toddlers knocking about the house.

Coffee tables have corners, glass is breakable, lamps fall over and white couches are history!

When it’s close to “family planning” time and you need to reassess your living space, do yourself and your new baby a favour and buy pieces that are child-friendly and remove the things that aren't.

Here are a few guidelines to avoid performing Jonty Rhodes diving saves every 10 minutes:

  1. Purchase a child-friendly coffee table - round is good or one that doesn’t feel like granite or have super sharp corners.

  2. Use slip covers or throws to cover your couch - if you like it and want it around past the two year mark!

  3. Buy decorative storage like baskets and woven drawers - they don’t generally hurt anyone and look really good.

  4. Pack away and store all your breakables – Yip, all those things you cherish and would hate to see smashed into tiny pieces - who needs the hassle really.

  5. Say goodbye to anything white or off-white in color - chances are these will get dyed in patches organically over time - sorry :(

  6. Reinforce your standing lamps so that they can’t get knocked over easily - Avoid table lamps too.
